I hired 2 lawyers yesterday. My whole team says we need the help, but it is really scary to make this financial commitment. Payroll comes due no matter what I do, and that number has gone up a crazy amoubt in the last month due to raises and new hires. I better be sizing this up right.

I know e verybody thinks the boss is the bad guy, but this is not the case. I feel a lot of responsibility toward people that I hire. My stress is not what happens to me if this doesn’t work out - it is that I feel about obligation to provide them good jobs.

On a better note, a Sunchaser Oppo trip is being planned! The ‘chaser needs smog, so who better than HisStigness for the job? I need some used desks, so I will run through the Central Coast in an attempt to drag CaptDale along with me. (Plus I can see my mom).

Perhaps other Oppos will emerge and make it a thing of some sort . You SoCal Oppos are a friendly bunch, so it would not surprise me at all.

Eagerly waiting to hear if you park in the right place for the smog inspection!!

Congrats on the new hires. That must feel pretty good to be achieving that kind of success. Embrace it. You (and those you have hired) will do great.

Having grown up in a self-employed household, I’ve observed (although never lived personally) the stress and responsibility of being the boss. When the building bubble popped, my dad was one of the last guys in the area who still had jobs (he’s a residential carpenter/contractor) . B y the end of 2008 though , those had all dried up. My dad paid his guys out of pocket as long as he could, but after a while he had to give up and they all filed for unemployment.

I grew up in an area with a lot of money. The town immediately to the west was one of the top 10 wealthiest in the nation in the 90's (could still be, but I don’t care enou gh to look it up) . That town’s building department went from approving $30 million in work one year, to $200k the next. The whole industry ground to a halt . Half of the people at our local lumberyard, where I worked my first job that wasn’t for my dad, got laid off. Never to be seen again.

By the time the industry recovered, my dad had no crew left. Including the guy who worked for him since I was a kid, who did a bunch of work on my house with me. We haven’t heard from him in years. Honestly, I think my dad was relieved to not have to worry about him. To not have to put food on his table as well as ours. My dad will never retire, but he just does little jobs by himself now. He’s too old to work a full day of construction anymore, and he’s not interesting in working the 12 hour days it takes to keep a crew in full swing. He’s got a little posse of contractors who are all in their 50's and 60's, and they all team up together when one of them gets a big job. They can work until 2:30, and go home and take naps.

I’m just telling you all this, because I’ve seen what it takes, and it’s not easy. I appreciate you and everybody who works their ass off to create jobs. Also, a s somebody who believes very deeply in the public education system, we need those tax dollars from all though jobs too ;)

I’m in the process of hiring someone for the first time ever (I guess I’m management now?). It’s not my business, or my money (for now) but it has definitely been stressful. I’ve been pickier than my CEO has liked throughout the process because I do not want to pull someone from their stable job, only for them not to be a good fit and let them go, leaving them to the unemployment system. Eventually, you just have to do it I guess. The stakes in my situation are much, much lower than hiring two lawyers. From all the interactions I’ve had with you, you seem like an excellent business man, who has a plan, and cares about what you do and the people that help you. I’m sure you will be fine.

Keep us posted about the SoCal trip. I should be around!

Just remember to park as close as possible to the cone in front of the bay door and blow your horn so he knows you’re too important to wait.

If you need a water treatment expert on retainer for your firm I could be convinced to accept trips to California to ride in the Sunchaser and pet Toby instead of payment.

Used desks, it was just 2 hours ago I was complaining with my manager about the money saved for the company by going with a used desk for my work station. It doesn't fit the space but saved the company $8000.
